I guess i should start by saying that it's been a little while since i've made a real blog post... i suppose the last post was the one of me moving to KC. Anyway, much has happened to me since moving down here and i've been considering my options for how i'd share that with everyone... maybe some facebook albums?... was thinking of starting a new flickr account instead tho. It will have to happen one way or the other because I have sooo many pictures and videos on my computer that need to get off since they take up all the space on my computer. Hmmmm....

Today i took it upon myself to make a really nasty version of a Croque Madame, which seemed to turn out like an alternate eggs Benedict. it was alot less tangy, it reminded me of a grilled cheese as well.

Made mine pretty ghettooo... didn't have the proper cheese (so i used shitty cheddar), didn't have the proper bread (used wonderbread hahah, ewww) aaand I didn't have regular ham BUT I did have a really nice Ham Steak that i picked up from the farmers market a week or so ago. Threw a lil eggy on top too that was super sweet... and the sauce i made was pretty bad ass. Gotta do more sauces because it seems to come naturally to me. Sauce can make the boring, awesome.

I also made a new friend...

... I also found a front yard with all these crazy bronze sculptures...

... rich people in KC seem to be really into putting art on their lawns... even if the art is really dumb. Like, there is this one lawn with all these wooden sculptures of naked children and men and women wrestling eachother. hahaha, I need to get a picture because it is awesome.

Recently became obsessed with Ingmar Bergman... saw Hour of the Wolf lastyear but am now trying to watch as many of his films as I can get, it would be awesome to see one of his plays too. USA Netflix is great because they have a good chunk of his films, which has been great for passing the time and getting really into some good mental states... here's a few stills i took from re-watching Wolf and his film Faithless...

REMNANTS features four new video works by Baltimore artist Robbie Rackleff. Produced by filming modelled lego structures and post-production animations, the videos depict a world long described in much of Rackleff's already hefty oeuvre. Landscapes riddled with tall ominous structures loom amongst fog and tall grasses that sway in a meticulous nature; all evidence of inhabitants remain in the remnant waste left behind. Rackleff focuses on the ambience of his apocalyptic universe in Remnants, but gives furthur articulation in his continued Occult Master saga.

Rackleff, a Baltimore- based multimedia artist, received his MFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art and is a member of the Wham City artist collective. His work has been screened and exhibited throughout North America and Europe.

It is my great pleasure to have been invited by G Gallery and the VSVSVS crew to show some of my newest visual work to date. This exhibition explores the complexity of repetition and its relationship to order and malaise in the psyche of the creative mind. What began as a series of drawings, overtime developed into a dual channel video work that has been meticulously cut apart and reconfigured. New forms and meanings are given to images that are familiar and - in some cases - nostalgic. “Nothing is Wrong, Everything is Fine” emphasizes a belief in the effectiveness of art as a tool for healing and emotional externalization; a floating oasis for a ship lost at sea.

David FM Hanes, b. 1987 Toronto ON, is a visual artist/curator whose trans-media practice spans a variety of issues ranging throughout the collaborative and performative parameters of the space bridging lived experience and art. David has exhibited in Toronto, Los Angeles, New York and the Internet. David currently lives and works on the Toronto Island.

Laura McCoy was born in Cambridge, Ontario in 1981 and is self taught in drawing, performance, and video. Laura founded the performance events "NoFaceNoProblem" and "Real Boob" and also co-runs Double Double Land and Zine Dream. She currently lives and works in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

In performance, video and drawing, Laura McCoy peruses a slighted abstraction that relies on readily available tools and anxious modes of holding, whether they be the movement of a hand, the guild of a line or the start-stop of a photo(ed) “performance.” With self-conscious seams and slippery production, her work is done in haste and left for brooding.

MOVING to KANSAS CITY MISSOURI

The big day is around the corner! For the first time in 6 years I will be living in a new city and every inch of me in tingling with anticipation and nerves and excitement... basically the works. The past few months have been very jam packed with so much it feels almost as though the summer has been its own year! Honestly, it is kinda fucked. Since may I have helped Geoff open his solo, curated 2 shows, organized a number of events, gotten my solo together, and ready, made two music videos, workin like a dog on Nuit Blanche, got the flu, dealt with more red-tape BS than I ever have or wanted to AND got to go to a few cottages... built a sign... OK, the list keeps going. It's crazy.

Back to the subject of this post, MY MOVE! Okay so, I am gonna copy/paste some stuff about KC because it is kind of a jazzy town with a very loaded history. It is quite the American city and has some quaint nick names, such as: "KC", "KCMO", "Big KC", "City of Fountains", "Heart of America", and "Paris of the Plains". Funny right? KC is the largest city in the U.S. state of Missouri and is the anchor city of the Kansas City Metropolitan Area, the second largest metropolitan area in Missouri. Founded in 1838 as the "Town of Kansas" at the confluence of the Missouri and Kansas rivers and is situated opposite Kansas City, Kansas. The city was the location of several battles during the Civil War, including the Battle of Westport (which if you don't know one of the largest battles to be fought west of the Mississippi River, with over 30,000 men engaged and over 3000 casualties). Here is a painting of that:

This painting just struck me as I posted it... mainly because of the calmness of the inner field and the two opposing forces charging towards death. Kinda mental to think of the battlefield as somewhere between total chaos and totalizing serenity. Makes sense - when looking at paintings like this - why many modernist/abstract American painters would move towards simple, and yet overpowering, color fields and contrasts... such as Rothko or Newman....

... but not really, hahahahaha

RIGHT, ummm... more about KC....Kansas City is situated in "Tornado Alley", a broad region where cold air from the Rocky Mountains in Canada collide with warm air from the Gulf of Mexico, leading to the formation of powerful storms (although the city itself has not been hit with a tornado since 1876). The surrounding areas of the Greater Kansas City Metropolitan Area have had some severe outbreaks of tornadoes in the past, including the Ruskin Heights tornado in 1957, and the May 2003 tornado outbreak sequence, as well as other severe weather, most notably the Kansas City derecho in 1982. The region is also victim to the sporadic ice storm during the winter months, such as the 2002 ice storm during which hundreds of thousands lost power for days and (in some cases) weeks. Kansas City and its outlying areas are also subject to flooding, including the Great Flood of 1993 and the Great Flood of 1951.

KC is also has a cool crime history and is a pretty violent town (apparently)...Some of the earliest violence in Kansas City erupted during the American Civil War. Shortly after the city's incorporation in 1850, the period which has become known as Bleeding Kansas erupted, affecting border ruffians and Jayhawkers, who both lived in the city. During the war, Union troops burned all occupied dwellings in Jackson County south of Brush Creek and east of Blue Creek to Independence in an attempt to halt raids into Kansas. After the war, the Kansas City Times turned outlaw Jesse James into a folk hero in its coverage. James was born in the Kansas City metro area at Kearney, Missouri, and notoriously robbed the Kansas City Fairgrounds at 12th Street and Campbell Avenue.

As of October 30, 2006, Kansas City ranks 21st on the Federal Bureau of Investigation's annual survey of crime rates for cities with populations over 400,000. Kansas City ranked sixth in the rate of murders in that same study. The entire Kansas City metropolitan area has the fourth worst violent crime rate among cities with more than 100,000, with a rate of 614.7 violent crimes per 100,000 residents. In 2010 Forbes.com ranked Kansas City as the third most dangerous city in the country.

Much of the city's murders and violent crimes occur in the city's inner core. In the 2000s, Crime and Homicides spiked up due to organized crime or the gang activity in the inner city. However, attempts at revitalizing the downtown area have been more successful. Other parts of the urban core with higher poverty levels remain places in which crime remains largely unabated.

BUT PLEASE DO NOT WORRY ABOUT ME!!!! I WILL BE FINE, I AM CITY KID... DUH!!!!!!

JOAN JONAS

All I can think of anymore is how amazing Joan Jonas is. Last year I went to the Whitney Biennial and got to toy around a bit with her piece Mirage(1976/2005), which if you have never looked into you should. I especially think about this work in the context of current digital art and online images that make use of meta subjects. Jumps between haphazard drawing, benigne reference - that usually ends up being some kind of nonchalant greco indulgence - and trippy fades... it's no wonder that many people consider the current creative paradigm to be one of stupidity. The unfortunate thing is that so much of this work feels deeply personal and yet because of a lack of personal understanding the work fades away into a sea of formal unknowns and aestheticized wastes-of-time.

Anyway, Jonas includes imagery in her work that makes perfect sense right now in this generation, as it did at the time of its conception. What feels right is that the work has a level of criticality that I think questions the defining qualities of art markers and art thinkers. Maybe it's in the complexity in representing androgyny that really grips an interest from me, like something most post-wavers assume is a known and understood banality... I question this assumption. It's her ability to re-complex a cultural (and truly personal) banality that posits a subtle, and yet poignit, heavyhandedness that I respect. She makes poetry out of forms and movements and alter-ego and technology. Like she is a living user, a non-sexualized being that simply acts and reacts to percussions and re-percussions of acting. Theatrical nonsense... but not in a dada-sense.... in a Jonas-sense. Perfect Sense.

Bodies in motion, in time, in space, in captured lived experience will always be more complex.

Thinking about her also reminds me of that Maya Dern film I posted a while back, in that like Dern, Jonas accomplished a poetic harmony to her performance work that I feel many of her male contemporaries did not do. Jonas and Dern also share a fasination with the otherside of sexuality and ego, which I think echo's out into other generations of artists who I think pay ode to their poetics in ever more sublet ways. For instance in Alex Bags work Untitled Fall (1995) not only do questions concerning sexuality and pop-media arise, in what is a more explicite tone, but also her voice concerning criticality towards subjects of ego and soul-searching arch over the crude and lude explicates and subtly form into a fine gesture, one that feels as much about personal ownership as it does about the complexity of being a viewer of ownership.

I like to think that the assumptions one makes can be broken and re-formed... maybe they cause ego-shattering results but atleast something happens. This is maybe what I mean when talking about the unkown personal presences of images I see in abundance and daily. It's there, it just needs to be personalized but I think that it also needs to take on a new form. One that can encompass the same complexities of the lived experience and still use meta-imagery that we are all addicted to and love.

Mahabharat was a widely popular Indian television series based on the ancient Indian epic Mahabharata, an ancient Indian sanskrit which narrates theKurukshetra War. The 94-episode series originally ran from 2 October 1988 to 24 June 1990 and was produced by B. R. Chopra and directed by his son, Ravi Chopra. Viewed by over 5+ million viewers, this will be the first time it is publicly screened in Toronto outside of the Hindi community.
The idea to form this event was sparked during Teresa’s trip to Mumbai, in which she came across the soap opera while flipping through TV channels and became enthralled with the vintage video graphics and excessive theatricality of the production. Having introduced it to David on her return home - they decided it needed to be shown to their peers, in hopes of further distributing the excitement. This epic soap opera is a sensory overload of early computer graphics and includes an amazing musical score - you will surely not be disappointed.

Following the success of Sunday Feb27th, 2011's "Here and There and Here" at Artscape Gibraltar Point, The YoGuy Team is getting ready for itssister event of similar titling at Kensington Market's: Double Double Land (DDL) on March 27th, 2011. This time, 17 artists from 10 different cities will approach this 'coming together' in a curatorial re-contextualization that acts as an exploration of space and time; that their visions will bring forth a quest and adventure in the liminal, the mystical and the absurd. From ways of seeing, ways of experiencing and ways of escaping, each time-based work eclectically forms the nature of this special event.

Featured in the program are 2 live performances, by DDL artists, and 20 videos from visual artists; local and abroad. All artists in this show know that their context is the hosting space, while the videos approach this context through means of tone and mood, the performers use their intimate relationship with DDL to create thematic and haunting visual manifestations that reinforce the experience. They will act as anchors that stabilize and reflect the atmosphere of the event. As a curatorial experiment, “Here and There and Here/There and Here and There” explores ways of viewing that are not relying on the superficial but on the undercurrents of feeling and emotion.

Brendan Ouellette sent me this great article on Kenneth Goldsmith (founder of UBUWEB) and said that reading it reminded him of me and the show I just curated. So, naturally I read the article and was amazed to find that not only could I relate his words to my show, I found that I could also relate it to my practice and what I think I am doing right now; especially with my video and sculptural works. I speak specifically to how he talks about pixelation and poor-quality in film/video, that it is expected of many people something that is "bad" because they leave their expectations of something "good" to those who hold the authority over what is traditionally good or bad. It's also worth to mention his discussion over contemporary media and their relationship to viewing avant-garde durational work. That sitting in your bed, with your laptop and your headphones on, is far more satisfying and enjoyable than sitting in an art gallery and awkwardly loafing around while the work slowly leads on. Something about the relationship of duration, video, and comfort gives me a really good feeling inside and I think that it's a topic that's been lingering in my mind over my own work for the past few months; living on the island has had a kind of internalization affect on me. I also like to look at my sculptures in this kind of light too... that alot of my work is temporal and made of re-cycled and often re-used materials that become both socially and selfishly-referential. That a kind of passive process turns all the things around me into aesthetically pleasing and critically achieving works... something I feel a kind of hyped energy about it. Anyways, so many things i've done recently have been dominantly for an internet audience (one that I'm not even sure exists; a kind of stone into the pond... or phone into the pit...) that it makes me wonder if anything I do would be fitting for a gallery at all. Maybe it's best if I only exhibit emotionally charged banal drawings that inexplicitly verbalize a manifested scrutiny... hmm... Not that I think I'm into this whole labeling/critiquing of what is "bad art" (in that I think it doesn't even matter) but maybe it's all kind of a circle of ironisized moronism that thinks it's making breakthroughs or cheeky jokes... HA. I guess it's all fun and games.

Extra-Rational is a series of performances by emerging Canadian artists that embrace the aesthetics of popular culture and seek to recuperate/utilize these “low brow” processes of production and cognition. The artists in Extra-Rational intentionally make use of aesthetic choices and methods of production that directly challenge the rubric of high-brow vs low-brow culture. These artists use the position of the trivialized, the unmentionable, the frivolous, the carnal and the other as a means to challenge the rationalization of high culture.

Iris Fraser-Gudrunas is a visual artist, curator and filmmaker currently based in Toronto, Canada. Fraser-Gudrunas’ work investigates candid reactions ranging from apprehension to abandon. Thinking about what I am doing as a curator. What does it mean to string things together?... that some of those linked lines may cause disruption, dispute, calmness, comfort, confrontation... The idea of instant communication is just as abstract as the cut or edit in a film. Two separate things -or presences- are being brought together to form seamlessness. I like where these ideas are taking me because it's helping to cause a distance that I can finally see what I am doing, aside from aesthetic and experiential joy. I also am into the historical associations that are coming out of this... how so many things actually make sense together once you look at them properly. ILLZ-SIKZ-KIKZ
